抄録 | Objective: We performed qualitative research on the reading of Illness Narratives (Tobyo-ki) by medical staff to investigate what the staff obtained from such readings. This research was expected to be useful for medical education. Methods: Six of the medical staff members read the Tobyo-ki in advance. The six staff members then brainstormed on the theme of "what we obtained from it". These ideas were described on cards using approximately one line of text. Then, the cards were categorized and the common semantic content was summarized. Results: The medical staff obtained a comprehensive awareness from only one Tobyo-ki, such as the feelings of the patients, understanding the diverse values of disease, and identifying problems in medical care. Conclusions: Philosophically, human can't recognize as the same thing when saw the same thing. Essentially, this concept means that medical staff members cannot fully understand the patient's perspective and values by reading about them. Such information is obtained through a “filter” possessed by medical professionals. The use of Tobyo-ki should be encouraged in medical education to understand the advantages and disadvantages of such documents. |
